Welcome! I'm Pastor Zac and my goal is to join with you in exploring Christian spirituality and connect with the Divine Force of Love that permeates all creation. I'll do my best to provide thoughtful insights, reflective practices, and resources that encourage a heartfelt journey toward a more authentic relationship with God and the world around us.

There once was a king who was adored and feared by the people of his own great nation as well as others across the known world.

He understood that displays of power fueled these sorts of feelings in most spheres of influence at the time.

So he sought to display power at every opportunity.

When will these cautionary tales be observed with lasting esteem and trust?

How much longer must we be at best acquiescent or submissive, and at worst zealously in support, of systems and governments which glorify and seek stockpiles of worldly wealth and means of securing worldly power through violence and oppressive influence?

The American Christian most often does not want earth to be like heaven, despite our prayers and creeds which say “Thy will be done on earth as in heaven”.

Instead we seem keen to find the hell of this life and this world, so that our heavenly reward might seem all the sweeter.

Yet our God did not create hell.

We did and do.

With Fear and Great Joy
When Mary Magdalene and Mary arrived at the tomb, their curious expectation, their faith in the midst of grief that something joyful would come from all of this pain, was met with news that brought them overwhelming joy.

And yet, we are told their fear remained: “With great fear and joy, they hurried away from the tomb and ran to tell his disciples.”

Their fear remained, but their fear did not keep them from responding faithfully to the call to share the good news. They knew that everything they ever knew would change forever. They knew that life would never be the same. And yet, they go to share the good news.

Then, as they continue on their journey into the world to share the good news, in the midst of their joy intertwined with their fear and anxiety, Jesus comes to them. They find him, the risen Lord, along their uncomfortable, uncertain, terrifying journey.

It is a joyful thing to be called to work with Christ in the world, but we would be foolish not to be at least a little afraid of how this will change our lives. If we are not at least a little anxious about what the good news of the Risen Lord being alive in the world means for our lives, perhaps we misunderstand the magnitude of what we are being called to do.

And yet, the Good News is that as we find ourselves in these situations, we will find Christ there with us. It will be on our journey of intertwined fear and great joy that Christ will come to us over and over again.

In all of the gospels, which are the scriptures through which the Word of God is described to us through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth, who is the Word of God incarnate, Jesus never socially oppresses, physically assaults, or kills anyone, regardless of their offense. Physical violence and oppressive social systems are the antithesis of Christian teaching, faith, and a Christ-like life. In fact, each gospel undoubtedly shows that physical violence and oppressive social systems are the means through which self-serving people whose power was threatened by the Word of God, which would have us constantly relinquish wealth and power to bring about flourishing for all instead of a few, killed Jesus of Nazareth and sought to bring an end to the reality of the Kingdom of God on Earth.

Pastor Zac Head has been a pastor in the United Methodist church for twelve years, serving a wide variety of communities in West Alabama. He is an Asbury Theological Seminary alumnus, who has always identified as a church nerd, but has never quite felt comfortable with the cultural theology of his region: "There is far too much focus on the dualistic understanding of salvation and the afterlife. A truly faithful response to the ongoing life of The Eternal Christ must be chiefly focused on living lives of loving service to God and neighbor."
